With the leaves falling from the trees and the first frosts waking us up in the morning, the countdown to Christmas is now upon us and North East Lincolnshire Council, working with the Grimsby Telegraph and other key partners, is delighted to be holding its annual Christmas light switch on, this Thursday, November 21 in Grimsby Town Centre.
The Christmas light switch on, part of the Big Christmas Event, starts on Thursday at 7pm with the Grimsby Telegraph’s nominated local hero taking the honour of switching the lights on, joined by the Peggy Elliott, the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire.
The festive event will warm up from 3pm on Thursday, November 21 with a whole host of fun for all the family including; food and gift stalls selling local produce and seasonal gifts, street entertainers which includes a stilt-walking Ice Prince and White Fairy, a lantern parade through Abbeygate, Peppa Pig and Santa himself who will be taking part in a parade with his sleigh and reindeers through the town centre.
Once Santa has completed his sleigh ride the Christmas lights will be switched on by the local hero voted for by readers of the Grimsby Telegraph, at the Christmas tree’s new location at the Bullring at 7pm.
The event in Victoria Street will coincide with the beginning of late-night shopping on Thursday nights in Freshney Place, offering residents the chance to start stocking up on Christmas gifts. There will also be free parking at Freshney Place and in Abbey Walk Car Park 6pm to 9pm, which normally closes at 6pm, every Thursday between now and Christmas, saving residents money.
Stagecoach will also be running free bus services across North East Lincolnshire from 4pm to 8.45pm throughout the festive period to coincide with late night shopping in Grimsby town centre.
The scheme, a joint venture between Stagecoach and the North East Lincolnshire Council, starts on Thursday, November 21 and will run every Thursday night up to and including December 19.
The Big Christmas Event will continue on Friday, November 22 from 10am to 4pm, with the food and gift stalls open once again, a competition to win £500 and street entertainment, including a balloon elf. There will be plenty of fun and entertainment for all the family throughout the two days, so please make a note in your diaries and we look forward to seeing you there to join in the festivities.
Jason Longhurst, Head of Development, NELC said: “The Big Christmas Event launches the start of the Christmas season in North East Lincolnshire and provides the chance for residents and families to start their Christmas shopping, boosting numbers in the town centre and footfall for businesses at this crucial time of year for trading. The council appreciates that household costs for families are still high which is why we have offered free parking and buses on Thursday nights, encouraging residents to make the most of what is on offer on their doorstep.”
Cllr Oxby, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport, NELC, said: “It is always a date for the diary when the Christmas lights get switched on and families can really get into the Christmas spirit here in Grimsby. The council is also offering free bus travel to help residents get out and about but allows them to save some money travelling across the borough.
“The event will have plenty of entertainment and activities to keep family members of all ages happy and the Christmas market offers the chance to start stocking up on gifts, as well as making the most of the late night shopping in stores across the town centre. We look forward to seeing you there.”
