Cleethorpes Leisure Centre refurbishment works start on Monday (2 Sept)

Work is due to start at Cleethorpes Leisure Centre as it sees the largest overhaul since it was opened nearly 30 years ago.

Over the next four months, the £2.5million programme of works will include the remodelling of the changing facilities at this site as well as the installation of a brand new slide and water cannon and upgrades to poolside tiling, lighting and viewing areas.

Other work includes:

  • Replacing the pool hall ceiling, and additional external works, including replacement of the cladding, fascias and soffits, and over-laying the roof
  • Installation of art-deco artwork on one of the pool interior walls.

While this work is undertaken, the “dry” side of the leisure centre will remain open. There will also be slightly reduced car parking space at the Leisure Centre, but alternative and additional car parking is being arranged. (Operational details below).

The contract for the refurbishment works has been awarded to Lincolnshire company, Gelder Group, and will be designed and managed by Balfour Beatty Workplace.

Kevin Manterfield, Major Contracts Director at Gelder Group said, “We are delighted to have been awarded this prestigious project and are looking forward to working with the council and Balfour Beatty Workplace to deliver this contract. We have an excellent track record in delivering similar fast track projects.

“We invest massively in our local area, including employing local people, and using local businesses where we can in our supply chain,” he continued.

Councillor Mick Burnett, portfolio holder for Tourism, Leisure and Culture, said: “We understand the closure of the “wet” side of the facilities might cause some inconvenience, but the refurbishment works are necessary. By doing the changing room and refurbishment works together, there will be the least disruption possible. And this will result in some top quality facilities for local people and visitors alike.”

Information about operational matters at the leisure centre

This work is isolated to the Pool Hall and wet changing areas and the fitness studio, health suite, class programme and all dry sporting activities will continue as per the normal programme.

Learn to Swim - The existing Cleethorpes Leisure Centre lessons will be offered at Grimsby Swimming Pool, or Grimsby Leisure Centre and the existing swim teachers will assist with delivering the lessons to keep the continuity with your child’s swimming development. We hope to accommodate all children's lessons and Cleethorpes staff will be there to welcome your child to their lesson each week. Further details will be available through the Lincs Inspire website.

Car Park advice - The extent of the works requires the contractor to use some of the centre's car parking for the construction period. Alternative arrangements will be made at close-by car parking. Cleethorpes members’ car parking discs will be valid in these locations.
